Some Theoretical Concerns about Applying Latent Trait Models in Educational Testing
نویسنده
چکیده
If there is one crucial problem with the application of so-called psychoJogical test theories in education (or in any other context). it is that both test deveJopers and test usersjust don 't know what they are doing. Let me give you two examples: First. we have been testing intelligence for three quarters ofa century now, but there are virtually no test psychologists who can tell what intelligence is or what they are talking about when they use the word intelligence. Still, each of us has a more or less vague feeling that this or that achievement is a mark of intelligence. Although such a feeling does not provide us with any sound terminological basis for constructing a psychological theory ofintelligence or for its assessment. it does keep us going. Why not just compare subjects

The Comparison of Two Models for Evaluation of Pre-internship Comprehensive Test: Classical and Latent Trait
Introduction: Despite the widespread use of pre-internship comprehensive test and its importance in medical students’ assessment, there is a paucity of the studies that can provide a systematic psychometric analysis of the items of this test. Thus, the present study sought to assess March 2011 pre-internship test using classical and latent trait models and compare their results. Methods: In th...
متن کاملSome exact tests for manifest properties of latent trait models
Item response theory is one of the modern test theories with applications in educational and psychological testing. Recent developments made it possible to characterize some desired properties in terms of a collection of manifest ones, so that hypothesis tests on these traits can, in principle, be performed. But the existing test methodology is based on asymptotic approximation, which is imprac...
متن کاملTesting for measurement invariance and latent mean differences across methods: interesting incremental information from multitrait-multimethod studies
Models of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) are frequently applied to examine the convergent validity of scores obtained from multiple raters or methods in so-called multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) investigations. We show that interesting incremental information about method effects can be gained from including mean structures and tests of MI across methods in MTMM models. We present a modeling ...
متن کاملAggressiveness as a latent personality trait of domestic dogs: Testing local independence and measurement invariance
Studies of animal personality attempt to uncover underlying or "latent" personality traits that explain broad patterns of behaviour, often by applying latent variable statistical models (e.g., factor analysis) to multivariate data sets. Two integral, but infrequently confirmed, assumptions of latent variable models in animal personality are: i) behavioural variables are independent (i.e., uncor...
متن کاملItem response theory and health outcomes measurement in the 21st century.
Item response theory (IRT) has a number of potential advantages over classical test theory in assessing self-reported health outcomes. IRT models yield invariant item and latent trait estimates (within a linear transformation), standard errors conditional on trait level, and trait estimates anchored to item content. IRT also facilitates evaluation of differential item functioning, inclusion of ...
